Fort Lewis, Wash. — Fort Lewis employees will deliver a 10-foot wide propeller to the Washington State Dept. of Veterans Affairs Soldiers Home in Orting on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at approximately 10:30 a.m. The delivery of the surplus U.S. Coast Guard cutter screw will mark the final leg of a multi-service, multi-agency effort to erect the propeller on the home's static display field as a tribute to veterans from all services.
The screw-type propeller was removed from the C.G.C. Storis after the ship was decommissioned. The C.G.C. Storis, built in 1941, was the oldest cutter in the Coast Guard's fleet until it's decommissioning February, 2007.
The cutter's hull is slated for use as a U.S. Coast Guard museum, and the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office made the propeller available to other government agencies.
Officials from the Washington state Department of Veterans Affairs requested the propeller for use in a display paying tribute to the service of Washington's veteran Sailors and Coast Guard personnel. The propeller was stored at Fort Lewis while the Soldiers Home constructed a concrete slab and worked with the U.S. Navy Port of Bremerton to locate a steel shaft capable of supporting the 20,000 lb. screw.
Then, the Fort Lewis Installation Transportation Division made arrangements with the state Department of Transportation to transport the oversized load. Local businesses have volunteered the use of a crane and crane-operator for offloading and positioning the screw on the display pad when it is delivered.
